List age, but do not include birth date, mother's maiden name, personal identifiers (including home address) in obituary
Send copies of death certificate to all three credit reporting agencies by certified mail with return receipt requested asking them to put "deceased alert" on credit report
Couple of weeks after notifying credit reporting agencies, check one companies report at https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp to see if any suspicious activity. Several months later check a different one. Several months later check the third.
Send copies of death certificate to banks, insurers, brokerages, credit card companies, mortgage companies and asked when closed to list as "Closed: Account Holder is Deceased"
Remove name of deceased from joint accounts
Advise Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 http://www.ssa.gov/pgm/services.htm
Contact DMV to cancel driver licencse of deceased to prevent duplicates from being issued
